Whether it's a client server or a web-based application, today it's likely there's a back-end database involved. And not just Access or some other single user database. High-end relational databases like Microsoft's Sql Server, Informix, Oracle, and others are being used to manage today's high-volume business transactions.

The software engineers of today need more than just a casual understanding of SQL. I've had the opportunity over the past 10+ years to use several of the high-end, RDMS solutions available today. My experience includes not only database design and query optimization, but also the use of such 3rd party add-ons as "Crystal Reports".
